Background of the Study
Digital code‑mixing—the blending of elements from different languages in online communication—is a prominent feature of Nigerian Facebook posts. This practice reflects the country’s rich linguistic diversity and serves as a marker of cultural identity. On Facebook, users often integrate indigenous languages with English, creating hybrid linguistic forms that are contextually relevant and socially resonant. The informal nature of Facebook posts encourages creative language use, enabling users to express nuanced meanings that would be difficult to convey in a monolingual setting (Uzo, 2023). This study examines digital code‑mixing by analyzing Facebook posts from various Nigerian online communities. It investigates how code‑mixing functions as a communicative strategy to navigate social contexts, negotiate identities, and manage interpersonal relationships. The research situates code‑mixing within broader bilingual communication theories and explores its implications for language evolution in digital environments (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although code‑mixing is widespread in Nigerian Facebook posts, comparative studies examining its structure and function are limited. Existing research tends to focus on single instances or isolated communities, neglecting the broader socio‑linguistic dynamics that drive language blending in digital contexts. This gap limits our understanding of how code‑mixing influences online discourse and identity formation. The study aims to address this deficiency by providing a systematic analysis of code‑mixing patterns in Nigerian Facebook posts, thereby revealing the mechanisms behind language blending and its impact on digital communication (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To analyze code‑mixing patterns in Nigerian Facebook posts.

  • To identify the socio‑linguistic factors that drive language blending.

  • To assess the impact of code‑mixing on online identity formation.

Research Questions:

  • What are the predominant code‑mixing patterns in Facebook posts?

  • What factors motivate code‑mixing in Nigerian online communities?

  • How does code‑mixing affect digital identity and communication?

Significance of the Study
This study deepens our understanding of bilingual communication in digital spaces by examining code‑mixing on Facebook. Its insights benefit linguists, educators, and social media analysts, highlighting the transformative role of language blending in shaping online discourse (Uzo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Code‑Mixing: The blending of elements from two or more languages in a single discourse.

  2. Digital Communities: Online groups that share common interests or identities.

  3. Facebook Posts: User-generated content published on Facebook.
